Yin Yoga Teaching and Benefits

Teaching Yin is so much more than just offering technical guidance to get in and out of a pose. Naturally, this is where we need to begin, to ensure that our students are safe. However, once students are settled into a shape that works for them, we can use the stillness and quiet time to offer SPACE, and take them on a sweet journey through their own internal landscapes and inner worlds. Planting seeds for future growth, or watering the grass that needs attention.

When teaching Yin, there are times I prepare my words, contemplations and language to be used throughout the class. Other days, I might use quotes or poetry, and even other times I teach from an intuitive space and allow myself to connect to the theme, feel the energy in the room (or virtual platform) and let the content simply flow out of me, channeling higher power messages and teachings.

Over the years I have experimented with many different ways of using language and holding space. I have played with mantra, guided meditation, offered contemplations and seeded insights from my own life experience or from my practice. I also regularly offer stillness and quiet, in order to let the practice to speak for itself.

Some days I feel the words don’t land completely, or come to me effortlessly, at other times, it feels as though inspired wisdom has seamlessly flowed out from my heart. As a Yin Yoga teacher, our job is not to just stretch bodies, it is also to stretch minds. To encourage deeper movement into the physical spaces but also into the mental places where we all spend a lot of time.

As a teacher, we can guide students into their yoga poses and be done. However, when we are able to offer guidance through the heart and mind as well, teaching becomes more meaningful. This is how I love to teach and it is why I pour so much of myself into each and every class, lovingly curated for you.
